From Farm Boy to the Most-Watched Man in America
Before there were podcasts, social media, or livestreams, there was Fulton Sheen. Born in Illinois and raised in the Diocese of Peoria, he became an Emmy-winning television pioneer whose weekly program, Life Is Worth Living, reached an estimated 30 million Americans—using the most powerful medium of his day to bring souls to Christ. He famously credited his real writing team: “Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.” Long before anyone spoke of “media evangelization,” Fulton Sheen was already bringing the good news of the Gospel into millions of American homes.
A HISTORIC MOMENT FOR THE AMERICAN CHURCH
On September 24, the Church will declare Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Blessed at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis. It is a long-awaited moment, arriving with the encouragement of the first American-born pope, elected on Sheen’s own birthday. Pope Leo XIV called Sheen “a light of faith, hope, and love,” adding, “I myself am a witness of his evangelization when I was growing up.” This Beatification matters because the Church is not simply honoring a beloved figure from the past; it is presenting his life and witness anew to a world that needs the hope of the Gospel more than ever.
